Well, here we are—March is wrapping up, and the first quarter of 2025 is in the books. If you’re like most leaders, you kicked off the year with a fresh sense of purpose, some ambitious goals, and maybe even a color-coded planner (which is now buried under a pile of urgent-but-not-important things).
So, before the year sprints away from you, let’s take a First Quarter Huddle. No shame. No blame. Just a quick, honest check-in:
What goals are going well? Give yourself credit where it’s due. Maybe you’ve built a new habit, made progress on a key initiative, or at least remembered your word of the year.
Which goals have you conveniently “forgotten”? (You know, the ones that sounded great in January but somehow evaporated by February.)
Which goals feel way harder than expected? Are you facing roadblocks that you didn’t anticipate? Feeling discouraged? It happens.
How’s your overall balance? Are you thriving in one area (work, health, relationships) but completely neglecting another? Or is everything just… meh?
What’s keeping you from staying on track? Lack of time? Distractions? Unrealistic expectations? Or did a curveball throw you off course?
Now, let’s move forward.
Which goal do you sincerely want to recommit to?
How can you take a different approach so it’s more successful?
Here are some ideas:
✅ Start out slower—If you went full speed in January and burned out, ease back in with smaller, consistent steps.
✅ Find accountability—Ask a professional coach, trusted friend, or reliable colleague to support you. Consistency thrives with encouragement. My friend and psychologist, Dr. John Townsend says, “Will-power is overrated!” We need people to help us.
A Quick Refresh: Looking Ahead
Close your eyes for a moment. Imagine it’s December 2025. You’re wrapping up the year, feeling deeply satisfied, accomplished, and celebrating with a close friend, family member, or colleague.
What do you hear yourself saying?
How did you do it?
What are you most grateful for?
Now, come back to today. That inspired future version of you is cheering you on. Take one small step now that will make December-you proud.
You’ve got this. Onward to Q2!
Thank you Adam, I have found that the number and types of goals can change from year to year and that is OK. I encourage business owners to assess what's most important "now" and assign a theme, so there's an overarching goal. That helps inform the other goals.
And do you have balanced goals?
For the company, are there goals to improve:
- financials
- customer experience
- employee experience
- company operations
And then do we have individual goals covering:
- family
- health
- hobby
- finances
- spiritual, etc.
Elaine, you have been incredible helping me to this point in the year find the right number of goals with the right balance.
